Through vision, determination, and tireless advocacy, these people have played a vital role in working to preserve the unique natural spaces of Greenbury Point for future generations both wild and human. Their efforts remind us that lasting change often begins with local action—and that protecting the environment is a legacy worth celebrating.

Passionate birder, photographer, and advocate whose contributions to Greenbury Point left a lasting impact. Hugh was the top contributor to the Greenbury Point Biodiversity Project—with 683 wildlife observations.

Affectionately known as “The Osprey Man”—played a pivotal role in shaping Greenbury Point into the conservation area it is today. As Tower Manager for the Naval Radio Transmit Station from 1983 to 1999, John used his unique position—often perched 1,200 feet in the air—to protect the osprey that nested on the towers.

In the spring of 2022, Sue Steinbrook, historian and nature photographer, went for a walk at Greenbury Point and struck up a conversation with a fellow trail user who told her that the Navy was planning to develop the conservation area into a golf course.

Visionary force behind the restoration and conservation of Greenbury Point. As the U.S. NSAA’s first natural resources manager, Tina began her work in 1989 with the monumental task of returning a former naval transmission site to its natural state.
