HEROES

Hugh Vandervoort

Hugh M. Vandervoort was a passionate birder, photographer, and advocate whose contributions to Greenbury Point left a lasting impact. Hugh was the top contributor to the Greenbury Point Biodiversity Project—with 683 wildlife observations. An early morning visit to Greenbury Point on any given day was sure to include bumping into Hugh in his rainboots with his heavy photography equipment slung over his shoulder. He loved nature poetry and often edited his photography work to include quotes from his favorite works.

Hugh passed away in 2024 leaving a legacy of love for the birds and beasts of Greenbury Point.  Hugh’s striking photography and detailed bird reports, including the discovery of a breeding pair of rare trumpeter swans, helped raise public awareness and support for conservation efforts. Hugh’s dedication played a key role in expanding community interest in protecting Greenbury Point as a vital natural sanctuary.
